An outage knocked out power Monday morning for more than 5,000 customers in La Habra, Brea and La Habra Heights, utility officials said.

Southern California Edison officials said the outage started at 7:24 a.m. and initially left 5,267 customers without power.

Officials determined a piece of equipment failed in the area, which caused the outage, said Susan Cox, a Southern California Edison spokeswoman.

Authorities restored all power at 9:11 a.m., Cox said.

Best time to list a home for sale? Winter

So you’ve begun thinking about selling your house and you figure: Let’s wait until the spring or early summer before listing. The yard will look its best and potential buyers will be out in force. And everybody knows that winter is dead time for real estate.

Right? At least that’s the widely held belief. But national statistical studies suggest it’s not necessarily the case. Winter — officially Dec. 21 through March 20 for the upcoming season — can be a surprisingly advantageous time to list, shop, negotiate and buy. Consider some findings by researchers.
Real estate website Redfin has studied home listing, sale price and time-on-market data from 2010 through this past October from around the country, updating a two-year analysis it completed last year. It concluded that if you want to sell for more than your asking price, listing in December, January, February and March gives you a better chance on average than if you list any time from June through November. During the last three years, listing during those four months has produced higher percentages of above-asking-price sales than listing during any months other than April and May. In 2012, as the housing market rebounded, December listings produced the highest percentage of above-asking sales for the entire year — 17%.

1075 Milmac DR, La Habra Heights 90631If your goal is to sell relatively quickly, February “is historically the best month to list, with an average of 66% of homes listed then selling within 90 days,” according to Redfin. In the two-year study completed last December, researchers found that in each of 19 major markets, including cold-weather cities such as Boston and Chicago, “home sellers were better off listing their homes in the winter than during any other season.”
Researchers are quick to note that the advantages of listing in winter compared with other seasons are not huge. But the fact that winter produces at least competitive or better results by some measures should encourage some potential sellers to get into the game sooner rather than later.

La Habra Heights seeks ways to fund road upgrades.

LA HABRA HEIGHTS – More than two years after property owners by a 2-1 margin rejected a proposal to raise $1 million annually for a road tax, city officials again are talking about ways to finance infrastructure improvements.

The first step will occur at a special City Council meeting from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday when the council members will ask the community for its advice. “This is the beginning of a long-involved process to determine what the community wants to do,” said Mayor Brian Bergman.

Property owners in the past have approved taxes to pay for road improvements.

But the city now has no money coming in now, although a bond from the 1990s is still on the rolls and expected to be paid off in another year.

“We need to come up with a source of funding to be able to provide a continued flow for road maintenance,” Bergman said. Read more

We always knew that La Habra Heights was NOT in Orange County but rather the diminutive, wealthier sister town to Orange County’s La Habra — just across the L.A. County border.

What we didn’t know was the hills of La Habra Heights — a city with a $100,000 median household income, roughly twice that of La Habra — held an over-the-top luxury compound. And that acre-and-a-half villa has hit the market.

 

Seems that produce-trucking magnate Nick Radoi — who we hear docks a yacht in Huntington Harbor — is simply downsizing after constructing since 1997 a “no-expense-spared” mansion, according to the property’s listing agent, Marguerite Wherry. Read more

14 Teens Charged in Break-in, Party at La Habra Heights Mansion

After allegedly breaking into a massive mansion in La Habra Heights and throwing a party — promoted via Twitter — more than a dozen teens were facing criminal charges, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

The November 2013 party caused more than $1 million in damages and losses to an elaborate, 90,000 square-foot home, the DA’s office stated.

A suit of medieval armor and a stuffed snow leopard were among the items stolen, Sheriff’s Department officials said at the time, describing the scene as a “free-for-all.”

The teens promoted the party on social media, and then bragged about it afterward, authorities had said.

Twelve males and two females, ranging in age from 15 to 18, were charged with misdemeanor trespassing in separate cases. Nine of the teens were additionally charged with one count of felony burglary. Read more
